The Interdisciplinary Migration Research Unit (IMRU) was established in 2025 at the National Centre for Social Research (EKKE) and serves as a key hub for interdisciplinary migration research in Greece.
Migration is one of the most complex and contested phenomena of our time. In Greece, as elsewhere, however, scholarly engagement with it remains largely fragmented and operates in academic silos across disciplines, institutions, and research communities. IMRU is a direct response to this gap, bringing together scholars across the social sciences and beyond around a shared commitment to rigorous, evidence-based inquiry.
IMRU’s core activities include the organisation of regular interdisciplinary conferences, the publication of peer-reviewed edited volumes through EKKE’s publishing infrastructure, thematic data briefings on migration in Greece, and a blog series featuring accessible, research-informed writing on migration and refugee issues.
IMRU is governed by a three-member Scientific Committee of EKKE researchers, with strategic guidance provided by an Advisory Board of migration experts. The Unit actively supports the next generation of migration researchers by hosting interns, fellows, and trainees at various stages of their academic careers.
